Our Story

On May 14, 2014, three guys got together at one of their homes to discuss the idea of opening a new restaurant/bar in Lubbock, Texas. The thought was, though Lubbock had many “establishments”, what was missing was a place where there was that certain vibe that made people feel like the place was THEIR OWN; a place where a constantly growing group of “regulars” would be drawn to as that “go-to” location for great food and drinks, for business or pleasure. That evening, those three guys, Jim Davis, Tony Wright, and Troy Davidson decided to venture together to create just that kind of place. Over the next few days, The Back 40 Grill, a Lubbock original concept was developed.

Google “Back 40” and you’ll find that the term refers to a remote and uncultivated or undeveloped piece of land of indefinite size; as on a farm or ranch. Additionally… “the most remote or inaccessible part of any place”. The target of the Back 40 brand is to be a place where people can “get away” from the pressures of life, where, “the problems stay in the pickup”. People need a reliable place where they can relax and refuel. The Back 40 Grill was created to be that place.

Troy Davidson, one of those founding partners, a then, 26 year veteran in the restaurant industry, became the General Manager.

On September 8, 2014, the Back 40 Grill opened its doors and has been open for business every single day since. Even on some Holidays, you can ride by the Back 40 and find the doors are unlocked and a group of “regulars” and a few new faces have gathered for some great food, great service, and great times.

On March 21, 2018, controlling interest was purchased by Jeff & Tina McCreight. They and GM Troy Davidson and wife, Sonya Davidson became the new owner/partners. The McCreights bought in with the vision of expanding the Back 40 “acreage” into multiple locations.

On June 6, 2019, our second location, Back 40 Grill – Canyon officially began operations.
